When most people are stuck inside because of a blizzard, they stay warm with hot cocoa and watch movies. My little chiquita decided she wanted to make fondant like the Cake Boss. How the heck did I let her talk me into this? Obviously you will be using this to put on a cake. So make your cake of choice before you start this so it has plenty of time to cool. Alright, let’s make this darned fondant.
2 lbs powdered sugar
1 lb mini marshmallows
1/2 cup crisco
4 tbsp water (I know I have vanilla pictured, and a yeah, that’s an oopsie)
First add the marshmallows and 2 tbsp of the water to a pot and melt. Medium heat will do.
Stir contantly or it will burn and then you won’t be able to continue.
Transfer melted marshmallow to a bowl to cool a little while you prepare the counter. Get a sandwich bag and grab a chunk of the crisco. Rub the counter down.
Place half the powdered sugar on the greasy counter.
Make an opening and pour in the marshmallow mix.
Time to get dirty. Grease your hands very well with the crisco. In fact, grease your forearms, your elbows, your face. It’s crazy how it gets all over! Knead mixture together.
Keep kneading until all powdered sugar has been added to the mixture. If needed, add the remaining water 1/2 tbsp at a time. This kneading thing is a lot of work so I got the little one to put in some elbow grease too.
Once it’s all mixed together it will look like this.
Either use right away or rub down in more crisco and store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
Time to grab the cake. Frost it.
Roll out the fondant flat.
So after several attempts to lift this up to put on the cake, we gave it. We had too much breakage. Not one to give up, we got cookie cutters and made foundant cutouts to decorate the cake with.
I still hate fondant and will never make this again. The things we do for our kids!
